Planning a construction project on or near the water presents unique logistical challenges. This guide provides practical advice for builders, project managers and contractors preparing for waterfront material deliveries, marine access and rubbish removal across Sydney Harbour, Newcastle and the NSW coastline. Following these recommendations will help improve efficiency, reduce delays and ensure safe marine operations.

Planning Waterfront Deliveries

Proper planning before materials arrive helps reduce delays, improve safety and keep your waterfront construction project running efficiently. Understanding your site's access requirements before booking a delivery will save both time and money.

Delivering Materials to Site by Barge

Each waterfront construction site presents different access challenges, including available water depth, suitable mooring locations and crane reach to the landing point. Most deliveries are either lifted directly from our crane barge or driven onto a barge from our Glebe Island loading wharf before being transported to site.

To save time and reduce project costs, it's important that suppliers and site crews prepare materials correctly before delivery.

  • Confirm your site can be safely accessed by barge.

  • Check available water depth and mooring points.

  • Ensure materials are packed securely for lifting.

  • Confirm crane reach to the unloading location.

  • Contact our team early if you're unsure about site access or delivery requirements.

Waterfront Waste Removal

Removing waste by water is often the safest and most efficient solution for construction sites with limited land access. Planning ahead helps streamline collections and reduce unnecessary handling.

Rubbish Removal from Waterfront Sites

The most efficient and cost-effective way to remove construction waste is using 1 tonne bulka bags packed by your crew and positioned within crane reach. Once ready, we'll collect the bags by barge and transport them to our Glebe Island yard, where your nominated skip bin or tip truck can be loaded using our crane.

For clean fill, it's often more economical to empty bulka bags directly into a truck before transporting the material to an approved clean fill facility. The same bulka bag system can also be used to deliver bulk sand and stone to waterfront construction sites.

Typical Capabilities

  • Standard tip truck: Approximately 12 tonnes

  • Truck with dog trailer: Up to 25 tonnes

  • Crane barge: Up to 50 tonnes per trip

  • Maximum crane lift: Up to 3 tonnes per lift

Preparing Building Materials

Correctly prepared materials improve lifting efficiency, reduce handling time and help maintain safe marine operations throughout your project.

Perparing Materials for Safe Lifting

For general building materials:

  • Use pallets, stillages or cages wherever possible.

  • Stack pallets neatly and shrink wrap securely.

  • Clearly label loads with handling instructions where required.

  • Mark lift points and the centre of gravity whenever known.

  • Provide accurate load weights and dimensions before delivery.

 

If transporting loose items, road cases or heavier loads, additional crew, gangway access or specialist lifting arrangements may be required. Please contact our team early to discuss any unusual lifting requirements.

Scheduling & Coordination

Good communication and accurate scheduling help ensure deliveries arrive on time and marine operations run smoothly from start to finish.

Delivery Timing & Site Coordination

Schedule deliveries to our Glebe Island loading wharf in advance wherever possible. If trucks arrive late and our crew is required to wait, additional hourly charges may apply. If materials are arriving the day before loading, please let us know so secure loading and storage can be arranged. Storage charges may apply if waste or materials remain in our yard.

For safe and efficient offloading, maintain communication between your truck driver, ground crew and our crane operator. Ensure everyone understands the lifting plan, confirm delivery times with both your supplier and Waratah Marine, and provide your driver with a copy of our site map before arriving.
